Balcony Ideas: How To Make The Most Out Of Your Balcony

Published on April 1st, 2022

Apartment or townhouse living isn’t always conducive to having a great outdoor rest and entertaining space. If you’re lucky, you have a small Balcony to work with, and you’re likely limited in what you’re able to put there.

This doesn’t mean that you can’t make your small balcony work for you. You might not have a lot of space, but if you’re smart and crafty, you have options.

We’re here with a few fun apartment Balcony Ideas to give you some inspiration. Read on to learn more!

Create A Green Space

Are you tired of the boring concrete floor of your balcony? Could your space use more greenery? Sure, you can’t add entirely new flooring, but you can freshen up your balcony by making it greener.

Start with astroturf. You can buy it on the cheap and lay it down on your own. You don’t need any special tools and you shouldn’t need permission from your landlord because you aren’t making a permanent change.

Turf doesn’t look as nice as grass, but it’s soft and it will make your balcony look fresh.

Once you have your turf on the ground, start bringing out some plants. Choose plants that can survive in your local climate so you don’t have to worry about bringing them in and out every day.

For some extra flair, get a plant with long vines. Weave them through the fence of your balcony for a whimsical look.

Set Up A Tiny Eating Space

Do you love eating outside when the weather is nice? You don’t need a full-sized patio or a huge backyard to have an outdoor dining space! You can make it work even on a small balcony.

Put a small gas grill on one end of your balcony if you plan on cooking and you can make your entire meal outside too! Look for the best small BBQ here.

On the other side, you’re going to need a small table. Make sure that there’s plenty of room to walk around the table so that multiple people can sit there.

If there’s enough room, we recommend setting up a bench on the end of your balcony on one side of the table and a single chair on the other side so you can maximize your space and seat one extra person.

Get Cozy In Your Outdoor Seating Area

Speaking of seating, if you’re not into a full outdoor dining area, why not make a cozy seating area instead?

If your balcony ever gets wet, make sure that you either have a cover for it or you have weather-resistant fabric. If you want cozy seats, they have to be soft.

A DIY pallet couch is so easy to make and it’s perfect for small spaces. You can customize it to the size of your balcony if the original dimensions don’t work for you, and you only need a few tools. It’s also easy to move in and out of your apartment and you can customize it to your aesthetic.

Set your couch up against the corner of your balcony so it rests against the walls. On the other side of your balcony, we recommend a bar cart so you can bring drinks and snacks outside when you’re entertaining guests or have somewhere to put speakers to play music.

Finish the look with string lights woven through the fence for some cozy mood lighting.

Turn It Into A Private Room

Do you want more privacy in your outdoor space? One of our favorite balcony privacy ideas is to turn it into a kind of sunroom.

Get a long curtain rod that will fit between the sidewalls of your balcony. Put up a sturdy curtain (shower curtains are great for this because they’re long and water-resistant).

When you want more privacy, keep the curtains closed. This is also great for when it’s hot and sunny outside and you want to keep your home cool.

You can turn your quiet new “room” into a reading nook, a sitting area, and more. Your furniture will be protected by the curtain so you have more flexibility.

Relax In An Outdoor Yoga Space

Is your space just for you? If you have no intention of entertaining guests on your balcony, create a private yoga oasis for yourself.

There’s nothing more relaxing than waking up on a warm morning and doing yoga outside. Of course, if you don’t have a yard, you might not feel like this is an option. Not to worry, your balcony has more than enough room for you to get your morning yoga session in.

Set up a small bar cart on one end of the balcony where you can set your computer (for music or yoga videos) and any supplies that you’ll need, like yoga blocks and a water bottle.

Get a thick yoga mat that will keep you comfortable even on the hard concrete and lay it in the center of your balcony.

For more privacy, we recommend either doing the curtain trick from before or setting up a quick privacy fence with some thin sheets of wood that are cut to the size of your fence.
