It Was 20 Years Ago Today: Early Press Credentials

Rank has its perks. I am not talkin about smell though these are all Deadhead jam band festival media credentials.
Decades ago when I was startin out as a freelance journalist, in exchange for coverage I gained free entrance to some hippie festivals including the Gathering On The Mountain, the Gathering Of The Vibes, and the All Good Festival.

At one of the Gathering On The Mountains I covered, I saw Commander Cody go off repeatedly--he was amazing. Saw David Grisman play at another. Heard her sing,  and also met Donna Jean in the press room--the only female Grateful Dead member--while tripping at another. She was beautiful, and kind.

Enjoyed John Scofield jammin at the All Good Festival in Brandywine, MD--at a venue where Janis and Jimi had once played (I believe it's since been developed into a plan of homes it was semi-rural back when). Saw Moon Boot Lover play that show, too, and Gov't Mule at that show. If you close-up in the picture above on the media ID that looks like a hippie chick, the lineup of the show is in her hair. It includes Jazz Is Dead, The Recipe, Juggling Suns and many others. (The rope that is the necklace part of that credential is hemp, of course!)

Melvin Seals and JGB played at one or two of the "Mountain" shows and frankly, there were so many good bands at these shows that it'd be mean to not include all, but I cannot remember them all. Max Creek was awesome, Splintered Sunlight was great, just to name some off the top of my head.

Jeh Kulu Dance and Drum Theater was a wonderful morning treat at Gathering Of The Vibes in Croton Point Park, NY. Got turned on to the Zen Tricksters at that show, too.

One of the highlights of The Gathering On The Mountain festivals I went to in the Poconos back when was the performance by It's A Beautiful Day. Their electric flute-inspired "White Bird" made my brain tingle.

You may notice, if you look close at the picture, that I was representing Poconos Post for one show, and was writing for the Deadhead mag Dupree's Diamond News for another. Wish I had a copy of that Dupree's article... Johnny Dwork, are ya alive and well, my brother? Sending crunchy vibes your way right now, wherever you are in the Universe. Thanks, man.
