5 Bad Dieting Habits (And Why You Should Avoid Them)

There are many tips on dieting out there, but how is it possible to know what works and what is just a passing fad? Wouldn’t it be nice to have an idea of how our body actually uses Food for fuel, and what we can do to promote this? In the end, the body’s proper use of food to create energy will allow for a healthy balance and promote overall wellbeing. Let’s take a look, then, at some basic, but simple ways you can boost your body’s ability to transform food into healthy fuel and some habits to avoid in the process.

Skipping your Breakfast of Champions

One habit to avoid for sure is skipping breakfast with the idea that we’re helping in the weight-loss process. It has been said so often, and is so true—that breakfast is the most important meal all day. Your body has been fasting each hour that it is asleep. Breakfast came from this idea—“break” + “fast”—breaking the fast to revitalize your body and provide it with the nutrients it needs to stay energized and keep you focused throughout the day. If you skip breakfast, you will end up eating more throughout the day. Make sure to eat a healthy and full breakfast within one hour of waking. Making sure the meal is warm will also help you feel full longer than if you ate a simple cold cereal. Your body will be so grateful!

Not Chewing Well Enough

Many people don’t realize that the digestion process begins with chewing. Not chewing your food well enough can affect nutrition and digestion. Your saliva contains enzymes that break fat and other nutrients down. Chewing helps break the food into smaller pieces also so that when it goes into your stomach, it will be digested more quickly. Chewing for longer will increase your protein absorption. It helps make some minerals and vitamins found in raw fruits and vegetables more available for your body to absorb as well.

Not Eating Enough Colors

Foods that are naturally bright and rich in colors are not only pleasing to look at, but they are also the most nutritious. The colors actually show that the vegetables or fruits contain flavonoids and carotenoids. These bind free radicals in the body, which aids in lowering inflammation.

Food Binging

Eating large amounts of food at one sitting is very unhealthy as an eating habit. Eating beyond our body’s sense of “fullness” or skipping meals and then “compensating” later by a huge meal can be a sign of binging. Eating several small meals in a day is one way to avoid binging and will actually help to boost your metabolism.  Another idea is to incorporate the use of an exogenous ketone supplement into your daily routine. These are known not only to help change the body’s process of burning energy from using carbs and sugars to burning fat, helping with more efficient weight loss, athletic performance enhancement, having cognitive improvement as well as anti-inflammatory properties, but have also been shown to help decrease the overall food intake of those taking it.

Not Watching What You Are Eating

Do you have the habit of multi-tasking while you eat? Unhealthy eating can largely be due to bad eating habits. Eating a bag of potato chips during watching TV or snacking and checking your phone once in awhile may seem harmless, however what we do once can easily be repeated and develop into habits. Determining these habits in order to break them can be a great first step. Try to have a measured time or schedule for eating as well as a designated place for eating.

If you think about it, incorporating these few simple tips into your daily routine is a big step in the right direction. They are a few simple and natural ways to improve the overall health of your eating habits. Imagine having a schedule of meal times, with nutritious and scrumptious portions, that you can take the time to eat, either alone or with loved ones. Not only will it make your bad habits fade away, but it will also increase the joy and satisfaction you receive from these precious moments during the day.
