"Raindrop" Braids Are Giving "Renaissance" Energy

Braids are one of the top-tier protective styles. From traditional box Braids to vacation-ready goddess curls, there's nothing quite like having your hair styled and ready to go with very minimal work on your part.

Because the style is ever-evolving, if you do want to take your braids up a notch, there have been countless options to choose from, whether it's incorporating glitter or adding a pop of color. One of our favorite ways of late, however, has to be the addition of hair jewelry and accessories. Metallic cuffs, hair piercings, bubbles - you name it, someone's probably found a way to implement it into their braided look. Now, a new trend is emerging, thanks Beyoncé's "Renaissance" tour: "raindrop" braids.

Spotted on North West and other concertgoers during the Los Angeles stop of the tour, Raindrop Braids look exactly as you'd imagine: "They are any form of individual or extension braids that have transparent beads woven into them," hairstylist and author Kee Taylor tells POPSUGAR. "The beads are clear to emulate raindrops falling."

Given Beyoncé's decree that fans wear their best silver fashions until the end of the tour, it only makes sense that the makeup, nail looks, and hairstyles swiftly follow suit. Thus, raindrop braids are having their moment in the sun. To help us better understand the trend, Taylor is breaking down everything you need to know about raindrop braids below.

What Are "Raindrop" Braids?

It's a style that has been seen before but, as with anything in fashion, beauty trends are cyclical. "Lately, I've seen creators on social media and even celebrities like North West wearing raindrop braids," Taylor says. "In the past, however, stars like Rihanna and Tessa Thompson have worn similar styles."

After being popularized by Maryland-based creator Bethany Nche, raindrop braids have been taking over TikTok, especially over the warmer summer months. "It's a fresh and fun addition to a traditional style," Taylor says. "Braids have evolved so much over the years . . . people are always adding something new to make them cooler or to add a touch of character."

How to Get "Raindrop" Braids

If you want to get the look, there is one thing you should note. "Many people don't realize that the beads can be a little aggressive to sleep with," Taylor says. To mitigate any uncomfortable resting positions, she recommends tying your hair up into a bun.

Then, once you're ready to get started, there are some items you'll need. First, you'll want to go to Amazon or your local beauty supply store to purchase some clear beads. (These Pony Bulk Beads ($5) can work, or you can also get blue or iridescent ones to add some flair.) Next, you'll want to grab the Braid Bae Styling Gel ($16). "This will make the braids smooth and easy to glide each bead through," Taylor says.

Achieving the actual trend is fairly straightforward. "As you form your three-strand braids, add a bead to one strand and push it all the way up, then make your way down the braid and add a bead to each strand as you go down, adding as many or as little as you'd like," Taylor says. "Seal them at the end and you're done."
