It’s Time to Learn How to Masturbate With the Most Underrated Sex Toy on the Market

Though it might be your go-to to reach for a vibrator when you want to masturbate, it may be time to experience the sensations that come from a Dildo. But for those who have never ventured toward the phallic-looking sex toy, you may not know everything a dildo can offer.

As the most underrated sex toy on the market, Dildos are great for a number of reasons; not only can the versatile toy be used during vaginal penetration or anal penetration, but some dildos also make G-spot stimulation much easier.

Before buying just any dildo, though, you'll want to make sure you know how to use one. The good news is that dildos are super adaptable to your needs, so you can use it however you'd like. But if you want some instruction on how to maximize use out of a dildo, right this way.

What Is a Dildo?

This versatile sex toy is designed to essentially resemble a penis, but it can range in size, shape, and texture, says certified sex therapist Aliyah Moore, PhD, a sex expert for Sexual Alpha. The main purpose of a dildo is to stimulate internal spots by way of vaginal or anal penetration, but it can also be used externally on erogenous zones, too.

Types of Dildos

For those interested in using a dildo, it's important for you to familiarize yourself with the different types of dildos before diving in. "Dildos can be made from a variety of materials, including silicone, rubber, glass, and metal, and may come in a range of shapes and sizes to suit different preferences," says Dr. Moore. Below is a list of options to consider.

1. Realistic Dildos

Just as the name suggests, realistic dildos are designed to look, well, realistic. "They look and feel like a real penis," says Dr. Moore. Most often made out of materials such as silicone, rubber, or polyvinyl chloride (PVC), some of these dildos even include veins and testicles to fully look the part. "Realistic dildos are a popular choice for people who enjoy the sensation of penetration but may not have access to a partner or prefer the convenience and privacy of a sex toy," says Dr. Moore.

2. Curved Dildos

Calling all G-spot-lovers. "Curved dildos are designed with a curve in the shaft, which can be used to target specific areas inside the vagina or anus, such as the G-spot or prostate," says Dr. Moore. She adds that, by using a curved dildo, "it is possible to apply pressure and stimulation to these areas more directly, potentially leading to more intense sensations and more satisfying sexual experiences."

3. Textured Dildo

Textured dildos typically have bumps, ridges, or other textures along the shaft, says Dr. Moore. "These textures are intended to provide added stimulation and sensation during use by increasing the amount of friction and pressure applied to the sensitive tissues of the vagina or anus." But it's important to note that every body is different. While textured dildos may be a great option for some, their extra level of stimulation can feel uncomfortable and even painful for others, Dr. Moore says.

4. Double-Ended Dildos

If you want a dildo you can enjoy with your partner at the same time, allow me to put you on to a double-ended dildo. "Double-ended dildos have a shaft on each end, allowing two people to use it at the same time. These dildos are typically longer than a standard dildo and may be flexible or rigid, depending on the specific design," says Dr. Moore. If you don't have a partner, a double-ended dildo can be used for double penetration, too. This allows for both anal and vaginal penetration.

5. Suction-Cup Dildos

Suction-cup dildos allow for total control and hands-free play, since they have a suction-cup base that can be attached to any flat surface, says Dr. Moore. "Suction-cup dildos can be a great choice for people who want to experiment with different positions or angles of penetration or who enjoy the sensation of being in control during solo masturbation." Many people suction their suction-cup dildo to the shower wall for a fun take on shower sex.

6. Vibrating Dildos

"Vibrating dildos have a motor inside that provides vibration for added stimulation," says Dr. Moore, making this type of sex toy a fan favorite. Not only do they stimulate internal pleasure spots, but they also add a vibrating sensation - which you could also use externally, depending on your preferences.

7. Glass Dildos

Most often made out of borosilicate glass, glass dildos are an aesthetically pleasing option that are "strong and durable," says Dr. Moore. However, it's worth noting that glass dildos are not flexible, so if you prefer bendy sex toys, a glass dildo would be better used as home decor.

How to Shop For a Dildo

Before you begin masturbating with a dildo, you'll want to make sure you pick one that's best for you and your body. There are several things to consider to ensure you get a product that is safe and enjoyable and suits your needs, says Dr. Moore.

Start by looking at the material, since this can have a big impact on the overall experience. "Look for body-safe materials like medical-grade silicone, glass, or stainless steel, and stay away from porous materials like rubber or jelly as these can harbor bacteria and be difficult to clean," says Dr. Moore.

Then, think about what type of dildo you'd enjoy the most. "Consider the size and shape of the dildo you want to purchase, and make sure it is suitable for your body and preferences. If you're new to using a dildo, it's a good idea to start with a smaller size and gradually work your way up to larger sizes," says Dr. Moore.

You may also want to consider what you want to use the dildo for. If you want something specific for G-spot stimulation or prostate play, look for dildos designed specifically for that.

Lastly, make sure to do some research on the brand and read reviews to ensure the product is of high quality and reputable. For easy access, here are the best dildo options we've already vetted that your orgasms will thank you for.

How to Use a Dildo

Once you have the perfect dildo picked out, don't forget to clean it. (If you're not sure how, read our guide on cleaning sex toys here and shop one of these sex toy cleaners, too.) Once you've cleaned your dildo, grab your favorite lube, since "lube can help reduce discomfort, prevent tearing, and make insertion smoother." (For recommended lubes, check out these options.)

Then, with your dildo cleaned and your sexcessories in hand, move to a comfortable and private place where you can focus on your pleasure. Since using a dildo is primarily about internal stimulation, it's best to warm yourself up before diving into penetration. Turn on porn, listen to audio porn, touch your erogenous zones, and do whatever else it takes to get your mind and body feeling aroused.

Once you're ready, apply lubricant to the dildo and slowly insert it into your vagina or anus. "If you experience any discomfort or pain, stop immediately and adjust the angle or use more lubricant," says Dr. Moore.

She adds: "Once the dildo is inserted, you can experiment with different movements and speeds to find what feels most pleasurable. You may want to try thrusting the dildo in and out or gently rotating it for added stimulation." She also notes that, for a curved dildo, it can help to experiment with different angles and positions to find what angle feels best.

While the penetration may be enough for you to get off, don't be afraid to pair the feeling with external stimulation. Whether with another sex toy or your fingers, give your clitoris some love for the ultimate blended orgasm.

Just note that if you are using a dildo for anal use, it's best to take special precautions to prevent injury or damage. "Make sure the dildo has a flared base or stopper to prevent it from getting stuck, and consider using a special anal lubricant that is thicker and longer-lasting," says Dr. Moore.

And as a general safety note, while it's OK to go from vaginal stimulation to anal stimulation, it's not advised to move a dildo (or anything else, for that matter) from the anus to the vagina without washing hands and toys first.
