Opening this Saturday, May 23rd, Chet Zar’s The Demon Show and Jasmine Worth’s Dark Night of the Soul will open at Last Rites Gallery in New York. The gallery, founded by legendary tattoo/fine artist Paul Booth, is one of the finest galleries dedicated to dark and obscure art in a variety of mediums and genres. As with all of the amazing shows they host , this dual solo exhibition is one not to miss. The exhibition will run from April 24 through July 3rd, 2015 at 325 West 38th Street. An opening reception for the artist will be held on will be held on Saturday, April 24 from 7 to 9 p.m. If you’re in the area, make sure to stop by and see these works in person. The Demon Show will mark Chet Zar’s third solo show at the gallery, and the latest solo show since All Hallow’s Eve at Copro Gallery in October 2014. The Demon Show serves as a continuation of the subject matter Zar is known for, atramentous expressions of the human condition. In Dark Night of the Soul, Worth explores the act of transformation through suffering in a series of fifteen oil paintings. Inspired by both the Occult and female experience, the artist utilizes meticulous layering techniques to craft scenes from fairytales gone awry, swirling seamlessly between the sweet and surreal and inevitably dipping into the valley of the morbid. Her work is deeply personal often depicting imagery that is both familiar and enigmatic and draws deeply on the symbolic power of rebirth. Through this iconography, the artist aesthetically documents a philosophical crisis arising from tragedy while simultaneously taking the viewer on a visual journey involving injury, loss, tragedy, and how these things affect us in the end.
The current exhibition continues Worth’s exploration of her own knowledge and experiences through the act of creation. Dark Night of the Soul touches on the idea of being wounded and the ability of tragedy to turn you into a different person than you previously were. The acts of mourning and survival are intimate experience and different for each person who has
