To his surprise, towards the end of the flight, the purser handed him a certificate that allowed him to choose from a range of compensation options. Since he is not an active collector of Japan Airlines miles, opting for mileage compensation he said didn’t make much sense to me. It would have required him to supplement his balance with Marriott points to reach the desired mileage level.
Similarly, JAL Vouchers didn’t appeal to him, so he ultimately decided to go with the Visa gift card option. He received a letter containing the gift card within 10 business days at his address in Thailand. The card is a VANILLA Visa Gift Card, which can also be obtained at Japanese convenience stores. However, it should be noted that this card requires swiping and doesn’t have a chip or tap function.

Interestingly, the compensation letter did not mention the specific amount of compensation. To find out the current balance, He had to sign into the website and enter the card details. The balance displayed on the website showed 20,000 Yen, which is generous compensation that he can use towards his next Japan trip.
To ensure that the gift card was functioning properly, he tested it at a supermarket self-checkout in Bangkok, and it worked without any issues. Overall, he was satisfied with the compensation provided by Japan Airlines and wanted to share his experience.
