TCCDM Pulls One Out..."Pet Sounds" - The Beach Boys (1966)

"Pet Sounds" - The Beach Boys (1966)

I found this copy of "Pet Sounds"...The Beach Boys 11th studio album...at a record swap at the table of 'Garageman G.'  The front and back cover is VG with no seam splits, but the spine is more than a bit crumbly.  The back cover has initials on the bottom and what looks like drink spillage near the bottom.  Not badly, but I couldn't clean it up.  Before purchasing the album, the G-man was forthcoming and pointed out the rough spine.  And as I said, it was a bit rough, but I appreciated his honesty on the sale.  He didn't have to say a word, it's my responsibility to check, but he did anyway.  That's a good person right there.  And still, front and back, I thought the album looked very nice.

As for the vinyl, I couldn't take my eyes off the shine.  When I finally had the chance to spin it, the square sounded so good.  For a record over 50 years old, it sounded amazing.  "Pet Sounds" isn't my favorite go-to Beach Boys album.  Nor my second.  But the historical musical significance can not be overstated.

This copy is an original US mono copy pressed by Capitol Records in Los Angeles.  The  "✻" stamped in the deadwax is the indicator.  Also, the number "6" printed on the bottom back cover next to the RIAA logo is an LA identifier code.

And I wanted a first pressing.  One I could hold in my hands and imagine what it must have felt like dropping the needle on this forward-thinking album.  I got chills.  So long surf music.  Hello, angst.  The songs pushed everything forward.  Lyrically and technically.  Its influences were heard around the world.  I'm so glad to own a copy.  I'll be looking for a nice reissue sometime down the road but for now...euphoria.

"I Just Wasn't Made For These Times" - The Beach Boys / "Pet Sounds" (1966)

"I keep lookin' for a place to fit in
Where I can speak my mind
And I've been tryin' hard to find the people
That I won't leave behind
They say I got brains, but they ain't doin' me no good
I wish they could.
Each time things start to happen again
I think I got somethin' good goin' for myself
But what goes wrong
Sometimes I feel very sad.  Sometimes I feel very sad.
(Ain't found the right thing I can put my heart and soul into)
Sometimes I feel very sad
(Ain't found the right thing I can put my heart and soul into)
I guess I just wasn't made for these times
Every time I get the inspiration to go change things around.
No one wants to help me look for places
Where new things might be found.
Where can I turn when my fair-weather friends cop-out
What's it all about
Each time things start to happen again
I think I got somethin' good goin' for myself
But what goes wrong
Sometimes I feel very sad
Sometimes I feel very sad (ain't found the right thing I can put my heart and soul into)
I guess I just wasn't made for these times."
