TCCDM Pulls One Out..."Push Push" - Herbie Mann (1971)

"Push Push" - Herbie Mann (1971)

Herbie Mann wasn't some spring chicken that showed up uninvited to the annual barn dance.  Herbie had recorded nearly twenty albums in the 1950s alone.  I don't know how many in the 60s.  So let's get real.  The flautist could flaut!  And this time Mann offers up a smooth, sometimes jamtastic, slice of jazzed-up soul-funk that's not bad at all.  Nothing too deep, mind you, but nothing to hurt your feelings, either.

What makes "Push Push" an even more interesting spin is slide guitarist Duane Allman provides all the solos, sans one.  And they are wonderful as you might expect.  (Sadly, a few months later, we would lose Duane in a tragic motorcycle accident.)  But the rest of the cast are also notched Muscle Shoals musicians who know their way plenty around a studio.  Best of all...you can find copies of this square for $2 or $3 dollars most any day of the week.  And it might be some of the best money you've dropped in a while.

"Push Push" - Herbie Mann (back)

Favorites include the outstanding title track..."Push Push" which is probably the highlight with Mann and Allman turning funky runs into a groovy jamfest.  The cover of "What's Going On" is so very nice.  In fact, inside the gatefold is a note reading..."P.S., Marvin Gaye's album What's Going On is the best album of the year!"  The 7-min "Man's Hope" has some great fluting and this time guitarist David Spinoza lets his presence be known.

This copy has a textured die-cut cover with the uncensored 'missionary dance' shown inside the gatefold, albeit the image is polite and tame and hardly in need of censoring.  Now about the front cover...whaddyagonnado?  Anyway, not a bad album to take a chance on.
