Pre-Screening Stance:

David Leitch’s Bullet Train is a fun movie, and The Fall Guy looks like it should be one as well. Also, I’ve been totally enamored with the charming interviews that Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt have been dolling out on their press tour for the film and I’m excited to see them on screen together.

Post-Screening Ramble:

The Fall Guy is a good time, but it’s mostly because Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt are just so damn great together. Their two characters – stuntman Colt Seavers and camera operator Jody Moreno – are on the verge of kicking off the next stage of their relationship but it falls apart when he goes into exile after getting injured. Flash forward a year or so and Seavers finds himself pulled to Australia and back into the movie-making biz to help Jody with some stunt-work on her directorial debut. Only, she didn’t request him, and he’s actually there to help a producer on the film (Hannah Waddingham) locate Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), their missing star and the man he made a career out of doubling for. Action and romance and comedy ensue.

There’s a bit of a slow start to The Fall Guy as it clumsily puts some pieces into place (and Gosling haphazardly narrates), but once Seavers is on the hunt for Ryder, the film really flies by and is a lot of fun. Like I already mentioned, it’s largely because Gosling and Blunt have the best chemistry and look like they had a blast making the movie, but it’s also just a great time seeing something so lovingly dedicated to stunt men (of which director David Leitch was one). There’s a lot of crashing through walls, big jumps, and so on and it’s impossible to not get caught up in the joy of the physical work on display. So yeah, this one is both very charming and packed with action.

If you love the hit KISS single I Was Made For Lovin’ You then you’re going to dig this movie because some portion of it always seems to blasting in the background.
