Early Life

Michelle Buteau was (born on July 24, 1977), in Hamilton Township, New Jersey. She is of French and Jamaican descent on her mother Marie Antoinette’s side and has Haitian ancestry on her father Michel Buteau’s side.

Upon high school graduation, Michelle wanted to pursue a career in journalism so she studied at Florida International University. However, she began pursuing her comedic career after college.


Buteau became a stand-up comedian, performing at shows from 2001 to 2006. Later, she caught the attention of Comedy Central and made her first television spot. In 2011, she was seen in an episode of the NBC’s sitcom Whitney.

From there, she continued appearing as a guest in episodes of TV shows such as Key and Peele and China, IL. In 2014, Buteau landed the recurring role of Private Tanisha Robinson in the Fox sitcom called Enlisted.

From 2015 to 2019 she had cameo roles in episodes of the following series The Jim Gaffigan Show, Broad City, The Tick, 2 Dope Queens, and Russian Doll.

The American actress Buteau rose to fame in 2019 after being cast in the comedy series First Wives Club. She began playing one of the main roles of Bree Washington in this series with the likes of Jill Scott, Mark Tallman, RonReaco Lee, and Ryan Michelle.

While appearing in First Wives Club Buteau continued working on several other TV shows including the 2019 miniseries Tales of the City. The following year, Netflix announced that Buteau would be a host of their show called The Circle

From 2021 to 2023, she had multiple guest roles in series such as Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens, The American Barbecue Showdown, Weekend Getaway With Michelle Buteau, and Zootopia+.

As for films, Buteau made her debut in the 2019 comedy film Isn’t It Romantic starring Liam Hemsworth, Rebel Wilson, Priyanka Chopra, and Adam DeVine.

Later that year, she started getting roles in films Almost Love, Someone Great, and Always Be My Maybe. In 2020 she starred in three movies Work It, Happiest Season, and The Stand In.

Buteau got to life the role of Captain Tarter in the 2022 romantic comedy movie Moonshot. In this film, she got a chance to work with Cole Sprouse, Lana Condor, Zach Braff, Mason Gooding, and Emily Rudd.

Other Collaborations

Outside of acting, Buteau lent her voice to the character of Vanessa Linda in the animated sitcom Bless the Harts from 2019 to 2020. Next year, she voiced Queen in the animated science fiction sitcom Rick and Morty.

In 2020, Buteau had her stand-up special Michelle Buteau: Welcome to Buteaupia. Her outstanding performance in this special led her to win the 2021 Critics’ Choice TV Award for “Best Comedy Special”.

In 2020 Buteau teamed up with Gallery Books and published her debut book, a collection of personal essays entitled Survival of the Thickest. In July 2023, Netflix premiered a TV adaptation of the memoir.
