On Wednesday, it was announced that Wayne Rooney will take on the role of manager for Championship side Birmingham City, marking his return to management in England.

The deal is set for three and a half years.

Previously, Rooney served as head coach for D.C. United, but left after the team failed to reach the Major League Soccer playoffs for the second consecutive season.

Birmingham City is also notable for having NFL legend Tom Brady as a minority owner and advisory board chair.

Additionally, Rooney will be joined by former teammates Ashley Cole and John O’Shea on his Coaching Staff.

“I have been building my managerial career, putting myself in challenging environments, to get me ready for this opportunity,” Rooney said in a statement.

“It’s a project that gives me a sense of purpose and I can’t wait to get started.” Rooney replaces John Eustace as manager.

Prior to Rooney’s appointment, Birmingham City was being managed by Eustace, who led the team to sixth place in the Championship with five wins from their first 11 games.

However, Eustace’s tenure came to an end on Monday.

Despite facing difficult circumstances including failed takeover bids and the threat of a points deduction, Eustace successfully helped Birmingham City avoid relegation last season.

“Wayne has been preparing for an opportunity like this since he embarked on his coaching education whilst still a player at Manchester United. He and his staff have the full support of the board and everyone at the football club.”
