FG approves 25% pay rise for lecturers in federal institutions

The implementation of a 25% pay increase for lecturers in all Federal institutions has been approved by the Federal Government.

Initially, the government had objected to this payment for lecturers in tertiary institutions, but had raised the salaries of Professors by 35%.

However, in a circular issued by the office of the Auditor General of the Federation to Polytechnics and Colleges of Education, it was stated that the implementation of the 25% pay rise was approved by the Presidential Committee on Salaries at its 13th meeting.

The decision was made after considering various stages of collective bargaining.

The circular that was sent out was a follow-up to a previous Letter from the Chairman of the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission (NSIWC), which was dated September 14, 2023.

This letter was specifically addressed to the Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, and it informed him that the government has raised the salaries of employees in federal government institutions.

Ekpo Nta, the Chairman of the Commission, signed the letter and disclosed that the previously approved salary increase of 23.5% has now been raised to 25%.

In the letter, Nta expressed satisfaction with the positive results that the Minister’s informal discussions have brought about.

He also assured the Minister that the Commission would support all efforts to improve the education sector.

Furthermore, the letter contained additional circulars pertaining to the salary structures in Universities, Polytechnics, and Colleges of Education.
