“Nigerian Music Heavy On Fusion, Never Stagnant” – CKay

Supersonic singer, Chukwuka Chukwuma Ekweani, widely known as CKay has that the Nigerian Music genre, Afrobeats is dynamic as well as being infused with other African sounds.

CKay explained that Nigerian Music at different points gets infused with elements from different regions, noting the artistes are always constantly trying out new things and blending sounds to ensure the genre is never stagnant.

He underscored how other African Music like Makossa from Congo, Highlife from Ghana, and Amapiano from South Africa has influenced Nigerian music intermittently.

The self-defined Emo-Afrobeat star said that this adds to the beauty of not just Afrobeats but African music as a whole, seeing how sounds rotate through the continent which ultimately guarantees the production of intriguing sounds at every given time.

He said: “You know the thing about Nigerian music is, it’s very heavy on fusion. We always mix a whole bunch of things. We try stuff, the sound is never stagnant. Like we always try to take it forward, try new stuff. We borrow elements from different places.

“There was a time when Afrobeats was heavily influenced by Ghanaian music. And a time when it was heavily influenced by South African music. And another time it was influenced by Makossa, from Congo (DRC). And there were many Hip records that came under that sound.

“I think it’s just a thing where the sound of Africa just rotates”, the Love Nwantiti singer added.

“At a certain point, South Africa brings the sound. At another point, Ghana brings the sound and everybody is on the sound. At another point, Nigeria brings the sound and everybody is on it.

“I think that’s just the beauty of African music. It’s dynamic and you can never tell where it’ll go next. But you can always just trust that it’s going to be amazing and mind-blowing. Maybe next year, the sound will change again; it most likely will.”
