Manchester United Provide Update on Mason Greenwood

Manchester United’s Chief Operating Officer has confirmed that the club is nearing a decision on Mason Greenwood’s future.

Greenwood, 21, has not played for Manchester United since his arrest in January 2022. In February, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) dismissed charges against him for attempted rape, controlling and coercive behavior, and assault causing actual bodily harm.

Manchester United launched an internal investigation into the incident after Greenwood’s criminal charges were dropped. Nonetheless, no formal decision on his future has been made. Despite having two years left on his deal, the England forward’s agreement contains a 12-month club option.

Greenwood’s status was supposed to be announced before the start of the new Premier League season. This schedule, however, has been pushed back. The final decision is made by the club’s Chief Executive Officer, Richard Arnold, although it must be approved by co-chair Joel Glazer.

Responding to inquiries from The Athletic, Manchester United’s Chief Operating Officer, Collette Roche, provided an update on Greenwood’s situation. Roche stated, “We’ve carried out an extensive and meticulous internal investigation, consulting as many relevant parties as possible to gain a deeper understanding beyond the original police investigation.” She further explained, “We’ve engaged with pertinent stakeholders, and now we are at the point of making the decision. This decision is entirely our responsibility.”

The assertion that the fan advisory board was consulted on the decision has been challenged. Rick McGagh, United’s Head of Fan Engagement, clarified, “To claim that we have thoroughly consulted the fan advisory board regarding the decision would be inaccurate. This has not been a consultation process.”

Due to the gravity of the allegations, a significant portion of the fanbase opposes Greenwood’s potential reintegration into the club. A protest opposing his return was staged outside Old Trafford prior to Manchester United’s 1-0 victory against Wolves in the Premier League on Monday evening.

The advisory board and the women’s team were involved in consultations, but the ultimate decision rests with Arnold. Following reports of their involvement in the decision-making process, several members of the women’s team have been subjected to online harassment.

During Manchester United’s pre-season tour of the United States, reporters sought Erik ten Hag’s perspective on the issue. The Dutchman responded, “While I have certainly shared my thoughts and opinions, it’s crucial to recognize that it’s a club decision. We must all respect that fact. I can’t delve into the specifics, but what I can say is that I’ve communicated my viewpoint. We will have to wait and see the outcome of the decision-making process.”
