2023 WWC: Waldrum reportedly abandons Super Falcons in Brisbane after elimination

Reports have emerged stating that Randy Waldrum, the head coach of the Super Falcons, abandoned his team in Brisbane after their elimination from the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

The Super Falcons were defeated in a penalty shootout by the Three Lionesses of England, leading to their exit from the tournament.

According to Prompt News, Waldrum left the team’s hotel a few hours after their elimination to return to the United States.

Sources from the camp revealed that the players and backroom staff were still asleep when the coach departed.

Joining Waldrum on his departure were several diaspora players, including Deborah Abiodun, Ifeoma Onumonu, Jennifer Echegini, and Esther Okoronkwo. Michelle Alozie, Toni Payne, and Yewande Balogun also left with the American coach.

The remaining players and staff are expected to begin their journey back to Nigeria on Wednesday.

Waldrum has expressed his desire to stay on as Super Falcons head coach despite discord with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in the buildup to the World Cup.
