Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed, also known as Aishatu Dahiru Binani, is a Nigerian senator from the All Progressives Congress (APC) who represents Adamawa Central senatorial district in the Ninth Assembly.

She previously served in the House of Representatives as a member of the People’s Democratic Party, representing the Yola North/Yola South/Girei federal constituency (2011–2015).

She is currently the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). She was declared the APC Adamawa governorship primary winner after polling 430 votes to defeat her closest contestant, Nuhu Ribadu, the pioneer Executive Chairman of Nigeria’s Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), who got 288 votes.

Aishatu Binani History/Early Life

Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed (born August 11, 1971). Aisha Binani was born into the home of Alhaji Dahiru and Hajiya Aishatu Utiya Dahiru, who were both practicing Muslims. Her mother died on December 10, 2020.

Education

She began her primary school education in Kaduna and finished it at Gwadabawa Primary School in Jimeta Yola. She pursued her university education in the United Kingdom, earning a Higher National Diploma in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southampton.

Career

Aishatu Dahiru Binani was a successful entrepreneur and businesswoman long before she entered politics. Binani established the Binani Group of Companies. Pharmaceuticals, estate, oil and gas, construction, publishing, telecommunications, and banking are all part of the company’s diverse business portfolio.

Binani is a thriving conglomerate that is rapidly ascending the success ladder. Binani Air, the first airline in Nigeria owned by a woman, will be launched in July 2020 by the Binani Group of Companies. The Adamawa State-based airline operates routes between Yola and Lagos, Maiduguri, Port Harcourt, Kano, Gombe, and Bauchi.

Binani entered the Nigerian political space after successfully establishing her legacy in the private sector, and she has done well. She has had a long and successful political career. She entered politics for the first time in 2011 as a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). She later switched allegiances to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Political Career

She began her political career in 2011 when she was elected to the House of Representatives to represent the federal constituency of Yola North/Yola South/Girei as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

She later defected to the All Progressive Congress and was elected to represent Adamawa Central Senatorial Zone in the 2019 general election.

As a senator, Binani chaired the Senate Committee on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In 2021, an appeal court in Yola declared Aishatu Binani the All Progressive Congress APC governorship candidate in Adamawa.

Aishatu Binani’s Governorship Ambition

On March 16, 2022, at Muna Hotel Jimeta in Yola, Binani declared her intention to contest in the 2023 Adamawa gubernatorial election. At the announcement of her governorship bid, she said:

“Despite all abundant human and natural resources, our state sadly ranks 25th out of 36 states in the human capital development index.”

Binani promised to address the issue and work to improve her state’s ranking. She was elected as the APC’s female governorship candidate for Adamawa state after receiving 430 votes, defeating her closest rival, Nuhu Ribadu, the pioneer Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and former presidential candidate, who received 280 votes during the APC Adamawa gubernatorial primary election.

Media Controversy

On October 14, 2022, a federal high court in Yola nullified the candidacy of Binani as the gubernatorial aspirant of the APC in Adamawa.

In its ruling, the court declared that there would be no candidate for the APC in the state for the 2023 elections but said both petitioners and defendants are free to appeal the ruling.
