Worker Who Sent Out Hawaii Missile Alert Has Reassigned

According. to the Washington post, The unnamed emergency department worker will not be fired because he made an honest mistake, Hawaii Emergency Management Agency spokesman Richard Rapoza.

“Part of the problem was it was too easy — for anyone — to make such a big mistake,” Rapoza said. “We have to make sure that we’re not looking for retribution, but we should be fixing the problems in the system. … I know that it’s a very, very difficult situation for him.”

As we reported, on Saturday, People began to receive the alerts around 8 a.m. The Alert read as:

“Ballistic missile threat inbound to Hawaii. Seek immediate shelter. This is not a drill,”

Thousands of people went on Twitter to confirm the horrifying alert, asking others if they received the same message in the state of Hawaii. Twelve minutes after the alert was sent out, congresswoman Tusli Gabbard tweeted on her account to clarify the alert was a false alarm.

The agency has already put in place new safeguards to prevent such a misfire, including a “cancel” button that will immediately send out corrective alerts if an erroneous warning is issued, officials said Sunday.
