A Baltimore man who was found barefoot and bloody after breaking into a neighbor’s apartment is being charged with murder for killing his 23-year-old girlfriend.

According to police, 32-year-old William Mason is accused of shooting and stabbing 23-year-old Khaya Lambert early Wednesday morning, inside an apartment the two shared.

Police say Mason’s attack on a neighbor ultimately led to the discovery of his dead girlfriend’s body.

Mason was found barefoot and bloody after breaking into a neighbor’s apartment.

The neighbor described what happened to Detective Donny Moses:

“The victim reports that he was laying in his apartment when he heard a loud crash coming from his kitchen area. He went to check to see what the crash was, he found the suspect laying on his kitchen floor covered in blood,”

The neighbor got into a struggle with Mason, who was armed with a knife.

“When the victim actually went to render aid to the suspect, the suspect turned on him, assaulted him, made threats, chased him outside, at which point, the victim was able to get away and call police,” Moses said.

The neighbor escaped unharmed.

After arresting Mason, something else at the crime scene grabbed the officer’s attention.

“They noticed blood prints on the inside of the apartment, outside of the apartment, in the hallway of the apartment. Of course, they were curious. They follow the prints to another apartment inside of the building where they located an open door,” Moses said.

Inside, officers found Lambert’s body. She had been beaten, stabbed and shot. Lambert, 23, was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The victim in this case, and the male who we had just arrested, Mr. Mason, were actually live-in boyfriend and girlfriend, and they had some sort of domestic incident, which resulted in our victim’s murder,” Moses said.

Investigators don’t know exactly what led to Lambert’s killing Wednesday. But it was a result of a “heated encounter,” according to Moses.

Police said there’s no record of domestic violence reports involving Mason and Lambert. According to investigators, Mason has no criminal history.

“It remains a mystery as to why someone who seemingly is a law-abiding citizen would resort to such a heinous crime,” Moses said.

Police said they’re not yet sure whether Mason was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the incident.

A GoFundMe page has been set up by relatives of Khaya Lambert to help pay for her memorial and homegoing service. So far $2,477 has been raised by 65 people.
