American television host Jerry Springer, who was born in England, has a $60 million fortune. Jerry Springer is unquestionably best known for being the host of the tabloid talk show “The Jerry Springer Show,” which debuted in 1991 as a political commentary program before switching to tabloid news in the middle of the decade to boost ratings.

Early Life

On February 13, 1944, Gerald Norman Springer was born in Highgate, London, England. He was actually born during World War II when Londoners sought shelter from German bombing in the Highgate station of the London Underground. His parents were German immigrants who fled the Nazis. Tragically, numerous members of Jerry’s family—including his maternal grandmother—did eventually perish in death camps. In January 1949, his family moved to New York, settling in Queens. Jerry studied at Forest Hills High. In 1965 and 1968, respectively, he received his undergraduate degree from Tulane University and his J.D. from Northwestern University. Springer worked as a broadcaster for WTUL New Orleans FM, a student radio station, while he was an undergraduate at Tulane University.

Career

Springer joined an Ohio law practice after college. He entered politics. He advised Robert Kennedy’s campaign. Jerry resumed practicing law in Cincinnati after Kennedy’s killing and was elected to city council in 1973. He started off as a political analyst and news anchor. Jerry was Cincinnati’s 56th mayor from 1977-1978. In 1982, he ran for Ohio governor but didn’t win.

As mayor, he hosted “The Springer Memorandum” on WEBN-FM.

These commentaries launched Springer’s career. Springer is a political reporter for WLWT in Cincinnati. Springer inherited Cincinnati’s lowest-rated news program. Two years later, Springer was the city’s most popular anchor. His popularity lasted five years. He received 10 local Emmys.

“Jerry Springer” premiered on September 30, 1991. “The Phil Donahue Show” was an inspiration. Jesse Jackson and Oliver North were early guests on the show. In 1994, Springer and his new producer modified the show’s format for higher ratings. Guests were generally asked to confess by a spouse or family member, leading to planned violence and shouting. By 1998, “The Jerry Springer Show” beat “Oprah” in many places.

Springer hosted “America’s Got Talent” for seasons 2 and 3. Nick Cannon hosted “AGT” for eight seasons after he left.

Springer is the executive producer of “The Steve Wilkos Show,” presented by Springer’s former head of security. “The Steve Wilkos Show” has 2,000 episodes over 13 seasons.

ITV approached Springer about co-hosting “This Morning with Judy Finnigan” in March 1999 because of his popularity in the U.K. In 2000, he returned. ITV produced 12 episodes of his U.K. show. He filmed “Jerry Springer UK” in his American studio. ITV showed five episodes of “Springer” in May and June 2000. Later, Channel 5 renamed it “Late Night with Jerry Springer.” 2000 and 2001 included 16 episodes.

ITV’s “Good Morning Britain” had Springer cover the 2016 U.S. election.

“Jerry Springer” last aired on July 26, 2018. 28 years were aired. Chicago from 1991 to 2009 and Stamford, CT from 2009 to 2018. The CW, which has the rights to make new “Jerry Springer” episodes, began reruns immediately.

“Judge Jerry” premiered on Sept. 9. It was renewed in February 2020. NBC Universal distributes and films “Judge Jerry” in Connecticut.

Personal Life

Katie Springer is Springer’s daughter from his 1973 marriage to Micki Velton (born 1976). 1994: They divorced. Springer is private.

He occasionally attends Yankees games.

Springer’s 1995 album “Dr. Talk” included mostly country covers.

Every Monday and Tuesday, Springer commuted from Sarasota, Florida to Connecticut to film “Judge Jerry.” In Kentucky, he taped a weekly podcast. He travels the country supporting Democratic politicians.
