Interview With Wolf Criton

By Charlie Matthews

Wolf Critton sent me an instant message that started with “my publisher saw your post”. Oh wow, you had me at hello! So we traded some posts, and I started listening to some of Wolf’s music. Wolf Critton (vocals and acoustic guitar) and Mike Colonna (on drums) are a force to be reckoned with. Together they create a vibe that drags you right into the middle of their drama. Love, guns, loneliness, dying, living… all of their so simple and complicated life issues pour out on you with every track.

Based out of New York, Wolf Critton is carving out a niche in the singer/songwriter category under the label of “rock and blues”, but there is much more going on here. When you scale back to two instruments, you have to cover a lot of ground to keep people interested, and Wolf Critton jumps right into the realms of rock-a-billy, Americana, storytelling, and angst, woven together with a very unique guitar playing style. Needless to say, I really enjoyed this band and can’t wait to check out their album “Wolves Among Men”  this summer.

As always we have 7 questions in the not-so-standard interview, and Wolf Critton was gracious enough to answer them for us.

  1. How do you describe your music to people?
The Pure unfiltered honesty of pages from my life.
  2. Tell us about your local music scene.
It’s amazing! The support for indie artist in the Hudson Valley region is 100 percent! If you want to be heard New York is a great place to start.
  3. It is the weekend; who should we be checking out in your town?
If I had to choose, I’d say Michelle Sangalli, Racheal M Hendrix and Jeff Haynes.
  4. What’s the immediate future look like for your band? Tours, festivals, working with other bands, etc.
We live one minute at a time and cherish the seconds in between. We have so much planned but bank our plans on TODAY because that’s all we are promised.
  5. What’s your outlook on the record industry today?
I think it’s great- indie and major alike. The beauty of today is you can say there’s something for everyone lol. Personally I couldn’t speak on the major industry internally because I’m not in that circle….. yet (wink wink).
  6. What three bands are you listening to right now?
White Stripes, Lenny Kravitz and Radiohead.
  7. What is that one piece of equipment you can’t live without?
My “Vista Wolf” by Luna Guitars!! I’d sell my bed before I give that guitar up.

Catch Wolf Critton over the next few months:
Luna Guitar Headquarters in Tampa,  Florida – April 17
Haverstraw King’s Daughters Library in Haverstraw, New York – April 23
Orangeburg Library in Orangeburg, New York – May 20th
