Pixies – Doolittle

By Charlie Matthews

Released in April, 1989 on the British 4AD label, Doolittle was recorded in three weeks at the cost of $40,000.  By June, the single “Here Comes Your Man” would climb to the number three spot on the U.S. Modern Rock Charts and 56 as a UK Single. At the 6th month mark Doolittle would have sold in excess of 100,000 copies. Since the end of the 80’s the album has continued to be a steady seller. In 2003, 10 years after the Pixies had broken up, the album would still be selling 1000 copies a week.

Doolittle was released to mixed reviews, but would be the inspiration for many bands in the future. Artist such as PJ Harvey, James Iha, Kurt Cobain and Krist Novoselic have all commented on how the album has influenced their sound. Doolittle would be re-released in 2015 and is on the list of “1001 Albums You Should Hear Before You Die”.  This album is considered by many to be one of the best albums of any genre to be release in the 1980’s.
