While I was coming up with the following list of fire related flicks, a part of me was wondering if I should include the Disney cartoon, Bambi, or the Steve Martin comedy, Roxanne. One part of me acknowledged the fact that both of these movies had sequences that either involved a fire or a fire department. Where as another part took on board that the main brunt of these tales weren't fire based, so to speak, as they hedged their bets more towards humor and drama than action and adventure.

So to deal with the psychological strain placed upon him, Jack relies on the support of his mentor, Captain Mike Kennedy (as played by Travolta), thus cementing the brotherly bond between them. One day Jack becomes trapped inside one of the worst blazes in his career, and this throws sharp focus over everything he holds dear, like his life, his family, his dignity, his courage, plus his fellow firemen of Ladder 49.

After a while he figures out that there is an underground volcano forming below L.A., which is spurned on when it blows up and molten lava begins to spread throughout the state. Eventually Mike teams-up with Doctor Amy Barnes (as played by Ann Heche), and together they battle the eruption, rescue citizens, and run the city's emergency response while sparks of romantic attraction fly.

Dennis is convinced that Brian isn't up to the pressures of working in the fire department, and that is why he's eventually transferred to a "safe assignment", assisting arson investigator, Donald Rimgale (as played by Robert DeNiro). But as you'd expect, there comes a time when Brian and Ronald embark on a case that involves Dennis, a case where they try to make sense of a series of fires relating to an oxygen-induced ball of fire -- called a backdraft -- which is somehow connected to a corrupt politician and the imprisoned pyromaniac, Ronald Bartel (as played by Donald Sutherland).

In the film, the world's tallest building becomes the victim to an electrical mishap on the day of its grand opening, and a subsequent huge fire erupts on its upper floors, causing all of the city's rescue teams to converge upon the scene and attempt to fight against what is a raging monster. Step by step, floor by floor, the heroes embark on a race against time to save hundreds of people trapped inside.
