Aussie A-lister makes shock appearance in two-minute film

As a script and continuity expert, Katharina Keil knows films inside and out.

With work on movies and TV shows such as Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, the ABC’s Total Control, and Australian film The Dressmaker with Kate Winslet, Keil has spent more than three decades ensuring plots, dialogue and character development make sense.

But Keil confesses she wants more than to ensure movies make sense — she wants to pursue a long held dream to direct as well.

Her film Waves, about two women playing a drinking game to reconnect at their local beach, is a finalist in the Best Australian Short FIlm Competition, and is her first as a director in almost two decades.

“I understand story and characters really well” she said.

“After years I picked up directing again. Waves stands for more than the waves in the ocean

“Once I thought, okay, if I don’t direct a film now then I never will — I decided to do it and everything flowed, everything fell into place and it was really easy and beautiful to do.”

At just two minutes, and shot in three hours, Waves, which stars Australian actress Susie Porter, would give Keil a chance to show her skills as a director.

“I‘m very grateful to be chosen in a competition that looked into so many films and I love that something like two minutes can show and tell a story when you have the skill to tell the story,” she said.

“I’m very, very grateful that a two minute short firm has done so well and is getting recognised and can stand up against films that are five or 10 minutes long.”

Waves is one of 30 shortlisted films for the $30,000 Best Australian Short Film as part of the competition being run by PerthNow in collaboration with major sponsor SAE Creative Media Institute.

“The nomination means the world to me because you know producers and production companies see me as script supervisor and I really want them to see me as a director because that’s what I want to do,” Keil said.

“I want to work as a director in television and movies for as long as I can.

“To be shortlisted in an Australian short film festival here in Australia, it really means that I get a profile and people see me for what I can do.”

The winners will be announced at a live-streamed awards night on Thursday, February 29.
