Neighbours script producer shares behind-the-scenes details of shock death

Neighbours spoilers follow.

Neighbours Script Producer Shane Isheev has shared his thoughts on the latest episode, which involved a shock death.

In Thursday’s episode (February 1), David Tanaka died of his injuries after he and Eden Shaw fell from the edge of a cliff, with Takaya Honda exiting the show.

He survived the dramatic fall, but insisted that Eden receive emergency treatment first, downplaying the severity of his own injuries.

When David’s husband Aaron and his twin brother Leo returned to help him, he had sadly passed away after his torso had been pierced by a sharp object.

Script producer Isheev has shared an emotional statement on X, formerly Twitter, paying tribute to those who put the episode together, both in front of and behind the camera.

He said: “When deciding who should write today’s Neighbours there was only one name who came to mind. Someone who’s just as invested in Aaron and David’s relationship as I am. Someone who understands the importance and significance of their journey. Someone who gave them the most amazing wedding, and has now given them the most poignant ending.

“Thank you Paul Gartside for your beautiful writing. Thank you Eugenie Muggleton for your incredible directing. And a big thank you to Matt [Wilson] and Takaya [Honda] for bringing them to life (and helping ensure they got a fitting conclusion).

“When creating this story, I had such a clear vision for this episode- especially the scene where Aaron and Leo carry David back. And it was Sarah Mayberry who was adamant that we give David his atonement. Thank you to the entire team for ensuring everything was realised.”

Isheev also reflected on the sad end for iconic couple Aaron and David, whose wedding back in 2018 was the first same sex marriage to air on Australian television.

He said: “In so many ways, I’ve poured a lot of my own relationship, marriage and experiences into them (engagement watches anyone?). Once during a meeting with Takaya, I told him I wanted Aaron and David to be the next Karl and Susan of the show. Sadly, it wasn’t meant to be. I’m devastated it’s over.”

Neighbours releases new episodes from Mondays to Thursdays for free on Amazon Freevee in the UK and US. In Australia, the show airs from Mondays to Thursdays at 4pm on Channel 10, with a 6.30pm repeat screening on 10 Peach.
