The Academy Awards has unveiled its Nominees for the ‘Best Original Screenplay’ award ahead of the 96th edition of the Oscars. The nominees were revealed at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, and celebrates the best screenplay.biz/top-screenplays/" 786 target="_blank">screenplays of the last 12 months.

The ceremony is set to take place on March 10th, 2024, and will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. He is no stranger to the prestigious event, having hosted the Oscars three times already in 2017, 2018 and 2023. In a recent statement, the comedian said, “I always dreamed of hosting the Oscars exactly four times.”

This year’s nominees include A24’s Past Lives, written by Celine Song. The film, starring Greta Lee, Teo Yoo, and John Magaro, is a beautiful romantic drama that follows two childhood friends over 24 years. The film was Far Out’s favourite of 2023, described as “an examination of missed connections and alternate possibilities”.

French legal drama Anatomy of a Fall has also received a nomination. Written by Justine Triet and Arthur Harari, this film tells the story of a writer trying to prove she was not responsible for the death of her husband. Sandra Hüller plays Sandra Voyter in this Palme d’Or winner.

David Hemingson’s The Holdovers, starring Paul Giamatti, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Dominic Sessa, has also been nominated. The film follows a strict classics teacher at a New England Boarding School who is forced to chaperone multiple students who don’t have anywhere to go over Christmas. The Holdovers has received acclaim for being beautifully bittersweet. 

There is a separate category for ‘Best Adapted Screenplay’, with nominees including American Fiction, Barbie, Oppenheimer, Poor Things and The Zone of Interest.

The importance of the script is something that cannot be understated. In recent years, the penmanship of some writers in Hollywood has reached new heights, with fresh ideas, beautiful dialogue, and unique structuring influencing the exciting works being produced.
