‘Shroud’ Doc, Book Bring Science and Faith Together

“The Shroud: Face to Face” has been a labor of love, driven by a desire to explore an artifact that beautifully straddles the line between science and faith.

The book and film of the same name invite us to embark on a thought-provoking journey that extends beyond the boundaries of our material world.

In a world where scientific skepticism and religious faith often seem at odds, my hope with “The Shroud: Face to Face” was to connect these seemingly disparate realms. In our current times, marked by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve witnessed a shift away from traditional religious practices, highlighting the perceived divide between science and faith.

However, my exploration uncovered a more nuanced relationship I couldn’t wait to share.

Drawing inspiration from the writings of Paul in Romans and the wisdom of Thomas Aquinas, my aim with this book (and film) was to showcase that both the natural world and the realm of faith offer glimpses of an eternal source of beauty and light. Many eminent scientists have found solace in their faith throughout history, resulting in a harmonious coexistence of these two domains.

At the core of “The Shroud: Face to Face” lies the enigmatic Shroud of Turin, a cloth bearing an image believed to be that of Jesus Christ. While skepticism has often shrouded its authenticity, a trail of historical references presented a compelling case to challenge disbelief, from the Cloth of Edessa in 544 AD to Max Frei’s pollen study in 1978.

As the narrative delves into the scientific realm, I was eager to convey how the 1988 carbon testing, which initially seemed conclusive, left room for doubt upon subsequent findings. The details of the Shroud are astonishingly aligned with scriptural accounts of Christ’s Passion and Resurrection, inviting viewers and readers to contemplate the profound implications.

With “The Shroud: Face to Face,” I aspired to break down the walls of skepticism and breathe life into timeless narratives. Faith transcends mere intellectual arguments; it serves as a guiding force for seekers on a profound journey. As John Paul II said, “The Shroud is a mirror of the Gospel… turns them to Him.”

In a world where objectivity can often be elusive, the Shroud baffles even the most rigorous scientific minds, leaving ample room for the metaphysical. This subject isn’t a mere compilation of facts; it’s an invitation to engage with a mystery beyond the material. With this work, I want to beckon readers and viewers to venture beyond empirical evidence, embracing a voyage of contemplation, reflection and faith.

Critics may argue that merging science and faith is inherently problematic, suggesting that the pursuit of objective truth could be compromised. They might assert that the Shroud’s enigma is best approached with a strictly scientific lens to maintain the investigation’s integrity.

However, I intended to present “The Shroud: Face to Face” as an expedition that guides us through the corridors of history, science, and faith, challenging us to transcend the divisions between these domains and embark on a holistic exploration.

This journey is not confined to the boundaries of material proof; it’s an odyssey of the spirit, inviting us to ponder the profound mysteries that connect us to the divine.

As you engage with this narrative, I hope that you will encounter a truth that stretches beyond the fabric of the Shroud, resonating through time and reminding us that science and faith, far from being adversaries, can harmoniously coexist on the grand stage of human understanding.

“The Shroud: Face to Face” is more than just a book or film; it’s an opportunity to embrace a dialogue that enriches our intellectual and spiritual pursuits, and I’m thrilled to have shared this journey with you. They arrive in theaters and book stores Nov. 30.
