Box Office Pro: ‘The Marvels’ Could Be Disney’s Next Bomb

“Ant Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” showcased the enduring strength of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

And then the film’s second weekend sales poured cold water all over that narrative. The third film in the “Ant Man” saga collapsed 69 percent, en route to a disappointing $214 million stateside haul.

That could be the very best case scenario for the next MCU release.

“The Marvels,” the sequel to 2019’s “Captain Marvel,” is projected to earn anywhere from $50-75 million in its opening frame, according to Box Office Pro. The film, opening Nov. 10, continues the adventures of Captain Marvel, played once more by Oscar-winner Brie Larson.

That film earned $156 million during its opening weekend.

The new film features not just Larson but Ms. Marvel (Iman Valleni) from the unpopular Disney+ series and Teyonah Parris as S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau.

The box office site suggests “The Marvels” could cap its U.S. run with anywhere from $121-189 million, a far cry from past MCU hits.

“Captain Marvel” snagged $426 million five years ago at the height of the MCU frenzy, plus an eye-popping $704 million from international sales.

Box office analyst Shawn Robbins has even more bad news to share about “The Marvels.” He notes the film’s pre-sales are slumping compared to previous MCU titles.

After starting earlier this week, the Brie Larson-led character sequel to 2019’s CAPTAIN MARVEL is pacing behind GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3, 72 percent behind ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA, and 42 percent behind ETERNALS at the same comparative points after going on sale.

“Eternals” was an outright flop with both fans and film critics while “Vol. 3” proved one of the recent MCU films to retain the box office glory of the saga’s golden days.

“The Marvels” boasts a reported $270 million budget, which means Disney (which owns the MCU) will need serious international help to avoid even more red ink on its cinematic ledger.

The Mouse House is having a terrible time of it lately, given a string of flops including:

  • “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”
  • “Haunted Mansion”
  • “Strange World”
  • “The Creator”
  • “Lightyear”
  • “The Little Mermaid”

The latter scored an impressive $300 million at the U.S. box office but stumbled overseas.

Larson, who won her Best Actress Oscar for “Room,” is a divisive figure in Comic-Con land. Her woke pronouncements off-screen earned her the enmity of more than a few prominent YouTube creators.
