Japan braces for powerful Typhoon Jongdari

Japan is braced for a Powerful Typhoon ‘Jongdari’ which is bringing winds of up to 180km/h (110mph) and hundreds of flights have been canceled as a result.

Typhoon Jongdari or ‘skylark’ in the Korean language expected to hit the country’s main island, Honshu, late on Saturday or early on Sunday.

The storm landfall in the area less than a month after more than 200 people killed in floods. Also, a heat wave left dozens dead afterward.

Japan’s Meteorological Agency has issued warning for locals to remain ready to evacuate. At 20:40 local time (11:40 GMT) the category 1 Jongdari situated about 200km south of Tokyo. The storm forecasted to make landfall close to the city of Nagoya.

More than eight million people warned earlier in July to leave their homes when torrential rain saw rivers burst their banks. But some people became trapped after failing to heed the order.

Hiroshima’s governor, Hidehiko Yuzaki said,

“We are afraid that people may not be able to evacuate due to strong wind or floods blocking evacuation routes”.

“I would like people to evacuate in advance so that they can save their lives.”

Departure advisories have also given to 36,400 people in the western city of Shobara, and 6,300 in Kure.
