Welcome to another week at KNITmuch, where I’m warding off the winter chill by knitting with  Universal Yarn Deluxe Worsted Superwash. This beautiful, springy, 100% superwash wool with a rich and expanding palette of colors is a great choice for warm and cozy garments, accessories, and home décor.

Deluxe Worsted Superwash is available in over 50 different colors of which I’ll be knitting with Charcoal Heather.

Deluxe Worsted Superwash is 100% wool, is machine washable on a gentle cycle in cold water and can be tumbled dry on a low temperature, which makes for easy care garments for all ages.

Each 3.5oz [100g] ball contains 220yds [200m] of extremely soft and lovely yarn with a recommended gauge of 18 sts x 24 rows = 4” [10cm] using a US7 [4.5mm] needle.

Befitting the season, I wanted to make a warm cardigan sweater. While searching through Ravelry, I came across this free pattern from the Universal Yarn archives, the Roof Tiles Sweater. I immediately fell in love with it for the texture and zipper opening, although, I will be adding my personal touches.

The pattern was originally designed for a yarn that has since been discontinued, Poems Silk Solids. I’ve opted to substitute Deluxe Worsted Superwash as I believe I can achieve similar results. Normally, I don’t use the same color of yarn as depicted by the pattern, however, this week, I’ve made an exception. Charcoal color is a neutral color, can be worn with just about anything and, it’s easy to accessorize.

Throughout the week, I’ll talk about yarn substitution, how I personalized the pattern, and most importantly, the process I use to insert a zipper in knitwear.
