My Cozy Bubble Blanket | Choosing a knitting project for cool weather

It’s time for a new project and as the days get shorter and cooler, I’m looking for a project to make me feel cozy and warm.

I have a knit Blanket in mind, both cozy and warm, what better project for cool evenings?

I chose the Bubble Trouble Throw Blanket, a free knitting pattern from Lion Brand Yarns that recommends Wool-Ease Wow, a chunky yarn. As I want a generous-size blanket, but not too heavy, I’ll use another Lion Brand yarn, I’ll use Wool-Ease Thick & Quick Yarn instead.

The bubble stitch gained a lot of popularity lately, there are cardigans, shawls, cowls, and hats taking advantage of the puffiness of this stitch. The blanket will be puffy, exactly as I want it.

It’s time to gather my supplies. The colors for the yarns sound like a healthy breakfast:

Oatmeal

Barley

Raisin.

This yarn is machine washable and can be tumbled dried, it looks like I found the right yarn for the blanket.

The yarn calls for US 13 [9mm] needles and I need a longer cord to accommodate all the stitches of the blanket. I found the KNITTER’S PRIDE Mindful 100cm (40″) Fixed Circular Lace Knitting Needle – 9.0mm (US 13) and I believe they’ll be perfect for the job.

I like the flexible memory-free cord with 1″ interval markings and the inspirational word engraved on each needle tip: INSPIRE.

I will need to swatch and adapt the pattern for the yarn I want to use.

There are a few other things to explore this week:

  • Do I break the yarn every time I switch the color?
  • How do I prepare the edges for the knit-on border required by the pattern?
  • How big should the blanket be?
  • What color sequence should I use?

I started with a simple swatch, by casting on 22 stitches and changing the color every 6 rows (or after each bubble row).

Join me tomorrow, I’ll take a closer look at the swatch and talk about how I adapted the Bubble Trouble pattern to use Wool-Ease Thick & Quick Yarn.

This is part 1 of 5 in this series
