[News] Xiaomi showcases 5G version of Mi MIX 3 with Snapdragon 855

GUANGZHOU, China, December 6 2018—Today, Xiaomi showcased the 5G version of Mi MIX 3 at the China Mobile Global Partner Conference. Among one of the first 5G smartphones, 5G version Mi MIX 3 sports Qualcomm’s latest chipset platform, Snapdragon 855 and X50 5G modem, with a maximum download speed of up to 2Gbps. Xiaomi also demonstrated Web surfing and live video streaming using the 5G network, providing a vivid experience of the future benefits of 5G.

Leading the way in the 5G era with China Mobile 5G smartphone in Q3 2018

Xiaomi has always prioritized R&D, especially with regards to core wireless technologies for the smartphone industry. The high download speed brought by Mi MIX 2‘s four-antenna LTE technology, Mi 6‘s 2 x 2 dual-channel Wi-Fi are widely acclaimed. Mi 8‘s dual-frequency GPS is also at the forefront of the industry.

That still holds true in the 5G era. Back in early 2016, Xiaomi set up a 5G exploratory research team to conduct comprehensive and in-depth research on the 5G standard. Since then, Xiaomi has participated in and led some discussions on 5G technical topics and has led the development of the industry.

5G has higher requirements for antenna design and transmission than 4G and Xiaomi is leading in antenna array research and development. Xiaomi also contributed greatly to the 3rd Generation Partnership Project, a collaboration between groups of telecommunications standards associations, helping it revise the existing standard of NB-IoT, an important part of 5G technology.

At the beginning of 2017, Xiaomi officially launched the design of 5G smartphones. In September 2018, Xiaomi took the lead in building 5G signaling and data link connections, laying the foundation for 5G commercial use. Xiaomi will participate in the first wave of 5G pre-commercial field test launched by China Mobile in the first quarter of 2019, and will also launch the 5G version of Mi MIX 3 in Europe, and then launch commercial smartphones supporting China Mobile’s 5G network in the third quarter of 2019.

Exploring new 5G applications

In July 2018, Xiaomi signed a strategic cooperation framework agreement with China Mobile. Taking advantage of its own strengths in the IoT field, Xiaomi will cooperate with China Mobile and other partners to explore new applications that make full use of 5G technology.

In the future, Xiaomi will make full use of its position as the world’s largest consumer IoT platform, and jointly promote 5G in the smart home field with China Mobile. Xiaomi will also explore opportunities in emerging business areas, such as 8K ultra-high-definition VR streaming, 3D holographic video call, 3D AR street view navigation, video game streaming services, among others.
