Qualcomm Unveils Snapdragon 855 Processor For 5G Phones

5G is coming, and companies are ready to offer their 5G devices. It’s the next major milestone for the wireless networks in the United States. They have all set their sights on the major upgrade that’s going to launch at the end of this year and start its expansion from then on.

Verizon (and AT&T, and Sprint) has already confirmed that it will be welcoming 5G on the back of an unannounced Samsung smartphone.

That will probably end up being the Galaxy S10, Samsung’s upcoming and oft-rumored flagship smartphone. And in that device will be Qualcomm’s newest processor, what the company just announced as the Snapdragon 855. Qualcomm officially announced the new processor at its conference in Hawaii on Tuesday.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 features

According to Qualcomm, this new processor will support “multi-gigabit” 5G download speeds. We should expect to see this new chipset in most of the major flagship smartphones launched throughout 2019. Qualcomm will tie its X50 5G NR modem with this latest processor, enabling 5G connections in many of next year’s devices.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset will be a septa core processor which will include four 1.8GHz cores, two 2.4GHz cores, and one 2.8GHz core. Apart from these cores, it will feature the Adreno 640 GPU with “Snapdragon Elite Gaming” optimizations for an even smoother gaming experience.

AI and Qualcomm 855

Right now, details on the chip are still pretty light. We don’t know what benefits the public will see when it comes to things like battery life and general performance. At this point, Qualcomm claims “up to three times the AI performance compared to the previous generation mobile platform”. There will also be a new, dedicated computer vision processor. Which will apparently enable to not only recognize who you’re capturing with the capture, but what you’re taking a picture of.

We also know that the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 is based on the 7nm manufacturing process.

Apple, for its part, is taking its time with 5G adoption. It is expected that Apple is going to launch its first 5G-enabled iPhone in 2020, and that Intel will be providing the 5G modem under the hood to facilitate those network connections.
