The Facebook Timeline can be a contentious place, even if you have managed to triage your friends list to the folks you really want to share your life experiences with, and, of course, vice versa.

Of course, Facebook already has the ability to “unfollow” someone on your contacts list, which will make sure you don’t see any additional content from that person but not un-friending them completely. But maybe you just want to trim certain words or phrases out of your view entirely. It turns out Facebook is working on something like that. This was first discovered by Jane Manchun Wong, who shared the find on Twitter yesterday.

This means that if you don’t want to see a specific word, or even a phrase, you would be able to essentially mute that word or phrase from popping up on your Timeline. However, it’s worth noting that the “people who post these comments and their friends will still be able to see them”, which isn’t too surprising considering you shouldn’t be able to determine what anyone else sees on Facebook.

There is no word on when this feature will ever see the light of day. This is just something the company is testing. However, this does feel like a natural extension to the feature it rolled out earlier this year, allowing users to quickly snooze a keyword for up to 30 days. That was a quick fix to avoid spoilers for TV shows and other things, but it was reliant on a broad keyword. There was no manual entry.

In addition to that, this latest test will also mute emoji, too. So if you really hate seeing a specific face, or something else, but see it all the time, this would be a way to stop seeing it.

Whether or not this is a good idea will ultimately come down to the individual.
