BE SINCERE: Who Killed Hip Hop Rap In Nigeria, Olamide Or Fans?

Hip-hop in Nigeria has been in existence since the early 80’s. It practised in Nigeria due to some Nigerian Artist who has external exposure to American norms and trends around the world

Hip Hop first gained ground in Lagos, Nigeria when the like of DJ Koll Herc, Afrika Bambata, and Grandmaster Flash made hip-hop beats diluting the Afro-culture into it.

In the earlier days, the funding wasn’t available as most of today’s’ artiste are producing music with their desktops and free software, but as the 90’s approaches the quality of hip-hop music increased, winning the Nigerian audience cover.

The groups like Swat Roots consisting of Modenine, Overdose, Terry Tha Rapman, 6 Foot Plus: The Thoroughbreds which had Elajoe, Illblis, B-Elect, Obiwon: The Trybesmen which notably has Eldee the Don and Ruff Rugged n Raw literally opened the way for the likes of M.I, Naeto C, Ikechukwu, Ice Prince, Jesse Jagz, A-Q, Vector, Yung6ix and so many of them.

Dagrin made indigenous rap relevant in the music industry the likes of Lord of Ajasa came before him but was not widely accepted by Dagrin’s single “Pon Pon Pon” has some cultural significance.

It talks about the lifestyle in Lagos, Agege, Ifewara, Mushin, Ikeja, Surulere, Isale Eko, and many other parts of southwestern Nigeria where life in the slums mixes up with life in the affluent cities and parts of Lagos Nigeria.

His songs touch upon ethnicity, pride while surviving the streets of Lagos and a hint of criticism elderly people hurls against bad behaviour.

Dagrin won The Best Rap Album at the Hip Hop Award that year and also was nominated for Artist of the year. Unfortunately, we lost a great legend in the year 2010 and fans were waiting for who to take the batton and continue with the hip-hop rap battle.

And we discovered the young talented and hard-working artist who is hungry for success Olamide who released his first track titled “Eni Duro” you will agree with me that track can never fade away because you can still rap the song.

Olamide successfully released 8 studio albums consecutively for the 8years of his relevance in the industry. Kudos to him.

But driving back to the cause of the decline of hip-hop in Nigeria to who do we apport the blame to? Is it Olamide Or the Fans?

If we want to say the fact we know Olamide would be perfect to fit into this shoe. Olamide coming up as a street ambassador who has the eyes on the goal, the goal of creating the song with fantastic lyrical content that has a message not just party sound with little or no meaning

Olamide has been termed as the most relevant rapper for this generation successfully dictate the choice of music genre for fans but stepping down on the lyrical genius throne that he has been given an accolade for from the past creative tunes.

On the other hand, the fans will be of the opinion that they want the song they can dance to, a fast beat music because of depression the government has caused in their minds. And the artists who don’t have a choice than to dance to there tune.

When we already have the King of Afro-Pop genre like the Wizkids,Davidos and maybe Kiss Daniels, now Olamide has can’t be tagged as a rapper or singer. Which is so demeaning.

After the much talk of rebirth where Olamide boasted of a full rap album, the “Lagos NaWa” album wasn’t close to a full-length rap album.

So now left to hear from you guys
