Abhi Bhattacharya is a director and screenwriter known for his work in Hindi films, including many popular hits like Anuradha and Jagriti. Born in Kolkata, West Bengal, he started his career in the theatre at a young age and went on to feature in more than 100 films during his lifetime. He is famous for his understated performances and his ability to bring out the nuances of a character. He acted in over 150 films throughout his career of 40 years, out of which of them were in Hindi and others in Bengali. He passed away in 1993.

Early Life of Abhi Bhattacharya

Abhi Bhattacharya was born on November 20, 1921, in Rajshahi, Bengal Presidency, British, India. He was actually born in a small village located nearby Rajshahi, which now comes under the land of undivided Bengal, which is now in Bangladesh. As his mother died really early when he was just 7, his father remarried, and he went to Gaya to live with his uncle. He had a deep interest in poetry, music, and drama from a very young age due to her aunt. This is how he got passionate about the movies and came into the film line.

Career

Abhi Bhattacharya (1947-1993) worked in Hindi cinema. He started his career when he came to Bombay for some work and got selected for the lead role in the film Noukadubi. He then worked in the film named Mahaprasthaner Pathey in 1952 when he returned back to Calcutta. He further acted in a movie named Ratnadeep around the same time.

After that, in the year from 1950 to 1960, he acted in numerous movies in the Bombay film industry and worked with top actresses of that time, such as Geeta Bali, Madhubala, and Mala Sinha.

Contribution

Abhi Bhattacharya had a distinguished career in Hindi cinema. He is mostly remembered for his work in classic films such as Jagriti, Sailaab, and Biraj Bahu. He has worked in some of the iconic movies of his era, which include Naata, released in 1955 by D.N. Madhok, and Apradhi Kon that got released in 1954 and directed by Asit Sen.

Another movie that was quite appreciated by the audience includes Subarnarekha released in Bangla in 1965 and directed by Ritwik Ghatak. He also worked in the movie Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose of 1966, created by Hemen Gupta. His contribution to Hindi cinema is invaluable, and he is still remembered as one of the greatest actors of his era.

Active in Religion

In the later stage of life, Abhi got more focused on the religious aspect of life and started becoming more spiritual along with the company of Shri Amiya Roy Chowdhury, also called Dadaji. Abhi and Dadaji worked as companions and also tried spreading Dadaji’s knowledge and his teachings. He served his companionship for almost 20 years, and whenever Dadaji visited Bombay, he and his associated people visited Abhi’s house, and it acted as a rallying point for all the people with Dadaji.

Abhi also shared his experiences and realizations that he got with Dadaji in a book written by him named Destiny with Dadaji and published by Ann Mills.

In 1956, Abhi Bhattacharya won the Filmfare award as the best supporting actor. This nomination was for the movie named Jagriti.
