The King of Kong” (2007): These Playuhs ain’t Playin’

I probably would have never watched the 2007 video game documentary “The King of Kong” had it not come highly recommended by my good friend in film review, Reely Bernie.

Now that I’ve seen this entrancing study of those whose undying passion is to beat “Best Score” on their favorite arcade machine, I gotta say that I’m glad I did, Bern, buddy.

I am these guys. Though never medically diagnosed, I know I am on the ADD Spectrum. Counterintuitively, I am also hyperfocused when it comes to regimented attention on that which I love doing. Exactly as these Gamers are.

I am a geek. I am a jock. And I am relatively happy most of the time.

I am who I am. I’ve no pretense to be anyone else. Again, just as these gamers.

What should have been the zenith of this doc, when the two Donkey Kong kings at long last occupy the same space and time, passes with a quiet thud as anticlimactic. Still, the uneventful moment reveals what is really the upshot of this whole story.

For it serves to reveal to us in most resounding fashion which of these two Top Dawgs is the one with the heart, the spirit and the integrity of a true champion.
