“X” (2022): Y?
The opening scenes of the wildly uneven Horror Slasher “X” hearken back to the days of the stark guerrilla film making of the 1970s. We’re talkin’ here about the legendary lurid likes of “The Last House on the Left”, “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and “I Spit on Your Grave”.
Filmmaker Ti West is clearly influenced by these visceral ventures that came before. His film is even set in 1979 Texas. But then his tawdry tale of a motley crew of amateurs shooting a porno flick at a remote farmhouse careens off course.
And when West dives face first into gratuitous gore festing and Christianity crucifixion, he reveals something. Something so damn disappointing.
He’s nothing x-tra special.
