"The Blob" (1958): Not nearly as Nutty as it Sounds
The 1958 Monster Horror flick "The Blob" is a remarkable piece of work. Straddling that fine line between clued-in camp and serious sci-fi, this story of an alien substance crashing to earth and terrorizing Small Town USA is perhaps one of a kind. Screen legend Steve "The King of Cool" McQueen makes his debut as a leading man, prolific composer Burt Bacharach contributes to the musical score and the titular gelatinous giant genuinely creeps you right out.

Film subtexts range from the era's fear of worldwide communist proliferation to a more modern day matter of fretting over global warming. Be that as it may, "The Blob" is certainly this: One helluva fun and frenzied thrill ride through a freaky fight with fright.
