"1917" (2019): Humanity amidst the Atrocity of War
It is difficult to imagine a more soul searing exposition of the savagery, brutality and barbaric insanity of war than the based on actual events masterpiece "1917".
Director and Co-Writer (with Krysty Wilson-Cairns) Sam Mendes seizes the audience from the get-go, inserting us into the nightmarish netherworld of two young World War I British soldiers and best mates dispatched on a seemingly impossible mission. The pair struggle through and among unspeakable carnage in a courageous race against time to warn combat fatigued fellow troops that their planned assault on German forces is doomed.
Thomas Newman's musical score injects a relentlessly ominous undercurrent of suspense and dread into spellbinding action, astonishingly presented as a nearly two hour continuous sequence.
War is Hell. "1917" is one hell of a confirmation.
