“Air”: (2023): Mom knows Best

It is said that “Behind every great man there is a great woman.”

Never more is this idiom solidly substantiated (once again) then in the new based-on-actual-events sports Drama “Air”.

Michael Jordan is by and large considered the greatest basketball talent our world has ever known. (Relax, LeBron lovers. Your guy has a permanent place in the reasonable GOAT conversation.) This thoroughly entertaining story of Nike guru Phil Knight (Ben Affleck in a quirky yet shrewd portrayal of the billionaire visionary) and his right-hand man Sonny Vaccaro (a resilient turn by Matt Damon) and their pursuit of “MJ” as a baby Chicago Bull to sell their “Air” brand basketball shoe makes one driving point crystal clear above all else.

Deloris Jordan (personified to sheer perfection by Viola Davis), Mike's mother and de facto endorsements agent, was the fulcrum from which one of the most important transactions in consumer product marketing History was culminated by way of heart, mind and dollar signs.

Thus lending further credence to every good son’s time honored credo:

Don’t mess with my mama.
