"The Sessions" (2012): Unflinching Look at Unconventional Love
So often it seems we hear about how "brave" or "bold" an actor's or actress's Performance is. But really, it's not like they're engaged in deadly fire fighting with Afghan insurgents. They are pampered celebrities pretending to be someone they're not in tales of fantasy. And that's just fine. We appreciate their gift, applauding their work when earned.

So stated, Helen Hunt's performance in "The Sessions" is about as close to "intrepid" as this reviewer's gonna get in describing an acting turn. This is a hard, hard, role, a sex surrogate to a paralyzed man (the underappreciated John Hawkes inhabiting yet another remarkable character) kept alive breathing with an ever-present iron lung. Ms. Hunt bares FAR more than her soul in this film. And she flat-out frickin' NAILS it. This is the best and most affecting work she has ever given us in a varied and exemplary Oscar-winning career.
Ultimately, "The Sessions" shows us that love, pure love, is introduced into our lives in many ways. And no matter how we find it, it is to be cherished and valued as the precious commodity it is in any form that we share it.
Whether that love be enduring or ephemeral, it will remain deep in our hearts, profoundly impacting us for the rest of our days.
