Would that "The Cabin in the Woods" (2011) had the Staying Power to Finish Strong

When the opening scene shows us a pair of solid acting pros the likes of Richard Jenkins and Bradley Whitford, you at least are given the impression that this one is not going to be yet another in a putrid parade of lamebrain piece of crap horrible Horror flicks.  And while this crazy creative effort does prove worthy of "a cut above" status, it's simply too contemptuous and dehumanizing to personally recommend.
Yes, the gruesome special effects are repulsively righteous.  And the driving premise of "The Cabin in the Woods", especially once fully revealed at the film's cacophonous conclusion (which includes a cameo bound to have you blurting out, "Oh, wow, it's 'so and so'") displays some actual thought and complexity on the part of script co-writers Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard.

But when all is said and done in, "Cabin" is constructed on a faux foundation of hopelessness and despair.

You come away expecting more after over an hour and a half investment in an impressively intricate building process.

To spin a turn on an old phrase, this regrettably disappointing effort amounts to not a house, but rather...all together now...a cabin of cards.
