A Tour of City Beautiful – Chandigarh

Introduction

Planned and developed by the famous French designer and architect Le Corbusier, Chandigarh is situated at a beautiful location on the plains of the Shivalik Mountain Range. Chandigarh is also known as the dream city of the first Prime Minister of Independent India, Jawaharlal Nehru. Le Corbusier has planned Chandigarh in such a way that it is an example to be followed by the 20th-century urban city planners. Along with monuments designed by Le Corbusier himself, here is a list of all the places you can visit in Chandigarh to spend good times with your loved ones.

Rock Garden

The best place to visit in Chandigarh is Nek Chand’s Rock Garden. This garden has many sculptures and artefacts made out of debris which makes it the most visited tourist destination in Chandigarh. While at the Rock Garden do not forget to pay a visit to the open-air exhibition spaced on around 40 acres of land. This exhibition was built in 1957.

Sukhna Lake

The best way to relax in Chandigarh is by taking a walk around the serene and calm Sukhana Lake. The silence of this place will really soothe your senses. This man-made lake is made with the Shivalik Mountains as the background and many rare species of fish are sighted here. During the season, even a lot of migratory birds are seen here. You can also enjoy a lot of adventure activities like boating and water-skiing in Sukhana Lake.

The beautiful architectural structures in Chandigarh are showcased in an amazing way at the Le Corbusier Centre. The Centre has small rooms, in which there are various paintings and relics which depict 20th-century urban city planning.

Asia’s biggest botanical garden, Zakir Hussain Rose Garden spread over 30 acres of land is located in Chandigarh. There are more than a hundred types of roses in this garden whose fragrance is no less than a relaxing aromatherapy massage. There are thousands of other rare species of plants and trees planted in the Rose Garden.

Government Museum and Art Gallery

Developed in the year 1947, the Government Museum and Art Gallery showcase fascinating Gandharan sculptures along with Rajasthani and Pahari miniature art. Being built at a prominent place in Chandigarh, this museum and art gallery is always filled with tourists appreciating the various art forms. Along with the Government Museum, you can also visit other museums like the Museum of Evolution of Life and the Doll Museum in Chandigarh.

Leisure Valley

Leisure Valley is basically an eight-kilometer-long stretch road, where the Rose Garden, Shanti Kunj, Hibiscus Garden, Garden of fragrance, Bougainvillea Garden, and loads more are situated. There is a 3-day carnival held at the Leisure Valley every year which showcases the talent of children and the elderly through various activities, making this time the best one to visit Leisure Valley. .

The shopaholics’ destination of Chandigarh is Sector 17. You can bargain shop almost everything in the Sector 17 market. As a tourist don’t forget to buy a Chandigarh souvenir from the Tiny Shop here. The famous Tiny Shop was started in the year 1980 and everyone with an artistic taste has something to be found here.

Tower of Shadows

One more amazing work of architecture by Le Corbusier is the Tower of Shadows. This brilliant masterpiece of the design depicts how the sun’s rays pass through the cleavages of the buildings. The solar movement changes the direction of shadows making this a tourist attraction of Chandigarh

Open Hand Monument

The third architectural marvel built by Le Corbusier in Chandigarh is the Open Hand Monument which emphasis on the unity and prosperity of mankind in general. Weighing around 50 tons, this monument is a masterpiece you will never see. A lot of people are seen clicking self-shot portraits with this monument.
