Post Graduate Government College For Girls Chandigarh PGGCG – 42

Post Graduate Government College for Girls (PGGCG) is one of the leading institute of higher education in Northern India. The college with its impressive building and rich infrastructure cater to the academic and professional needs of girls not only from Chandigarh and adjoining rural areas but also from different states of India.




Established in 1982 in a school building in Sector 19, the PGGCG used to have Arts and Commerce streams only. Later, in 1987 the college campus was shifted to Sector 42, Chandigarh. Spread over 18 acres of land, adjacent to the International Heritage Palm Garden, the college is situated in southern part of Chandigarh- the City Beautiful.With its imposing edifice, majestic building- blocks and rich infrastructure, it caters to the academic and professional needs of girls not only from Chandigarh and adjoining rural areas but also from different states of India. The college campus has nine gardens, an Information Technology Block, a fully air-conditioned library with a compendium of 38,010 books, equipped with INFLIBNET, computer and internet facilities, gymnasium and a state-of-art auditorium. The college has extracurricular and sports activities as well. Students have won accolades at national and international level in 19 sports events.

The Post Graduate Government College for Girls in Sector 42 provides 365 subject combinations in Arts stream, 13 combinations in Science stream and Honours courses in 13 subjects. Other than this there are two vocational courses sanctioned by the UGC which are also running in the college.

PGGCG – 42 has been accredited Grade ‘A’ by NAAC and the college secured 32nd rank in the National Institutional Ranking Framework, MHRD, Government of India, thereby, placing them among the top 50 institutions in the country and 1st in India as far as government institutions are concerned.

Today PGGCG – 42 has 4,234 students on its rolls and teacher strength of 129. An in-house 200 kWP SPV Power Plant, a project of the Chandigarh Renewal Energy Science and Technology Promotion Society with a provision of 800 SPV panels, was also dedicated to the college by the Chandigarh Administration.



N.S.S

College has three N.S.S. units having 100 N.S.S volunteers in each unit. Ten days NSS camp was inaugurated on 26.9.06 by Mrs. Swati Sharma, I.A.S, S.D.M. (E), Chandigarh Administration, N.S.S. Volunteers in collaboration with different NGO’S organized various activities like Blood Donation, Tree plantation, Cycle rally and health awareness program at college level, Volunteers participated in a number of projects namely campus cleanliness, training in first-air and fir-fighting and various awareness drives against AIDS, Drug Absuse, health and sanitation and pulse polio.

N.C.C

College has started with N.C.C. (Army Wing) sub unit from the session 2006-07. At present, 56 students have been enrolled for senior wing girls cadets.



Placement Cell

The placement cell of the PGGCG – 42 provides assistance to students regarding placements, cover awareness, job opportunities and awareness regarding higher studies in the fields of Arts, Science and commerce. The college has an active career Youth Club comprising a hundred students from all the streams. They are in regular contact with the activities of the placement cell. The college train these students in the technique of profile making, group discussions and interviews. They are further guided to disseminate the information gained to at least five students each thus setting a chain of awareness regarding their career opportunities available after graduation. During the month of November, the various companies are invited to interact with the students through awareness and there towards the closing of the session the February and March interviews are conducted. Selected students are given placement letters in the campus.

Last year many reputed companies such as Wipro, Dell, EXL, AIISEC, Frank Finn, TCY and CMRD come here for the placements. The placement cell comprises five faculty members and holds regular discussions with placement cell of other city colleges and with higher authorities i..e. DPI (colleges) and UGEIB in order to abreast of the latest developments in the placement field.
