Chandigarh also known as City Beautiful is a well-planned city and Union Territory of India. This city is known for its beauty, architecture and quality lifestyle. The city beautiful is located in Sivallik foothill range of Himalayas and shares the border with Punjab and Haryana that is why it was capital of Punjab and Haryana. It was planned by an American architect Albert Mayer in 1949. Then the Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier recreated it. Most of the buildings in this area have been designed by this well-known architect for which it was stated in one of the perfect cities throughout the world by BBC. The city has a very cool and soothing aura due to its greenery and scenic beauty at its surroundings.
Chandigarh is surrounded by hills which gives a very charming view of Kasauli and Shimla. The city has well-built roads which connects to other various cities. The nearest Airport to the city is situated in Mohali. There is a fully operational International Airport at Mohali for all the domestic and international flights. Rock Garden is a Sculpture Garden made out of waste material. The garden was founded and built by Nek Chand in 1957. Nek Chand was a government employee who secretly started this garden. He used to build sculptures made from Industrial and Home recycled ceramic materials. Earlier this place was stated as illegal and was being demolished by the government but he successfully owned this place with the help of public opinion. In 1976 the garden was open to public.
Rock Garden also known as Nek Chand’s Rock Garden is located near Sukhna Lake and spread over a 40 acres land. It has some fabulous man made waterfalls which are interlinked to each other. The garden is surrounded by different Sculptures which are made out of glass bottles, glasses, bangles, tiles, ceramic pots, electrical waste, broken pipes etc . If you closely look at the sculptures they have very interesting detailing. The colourful sculptures made out of such material which is totally a waste gives them a completely unique look. These sculptures are the main attraction of the garden. It is also acknowledged as one of the modern wonders of the world. A theater and a Miniature Village is also an attraction. Dance and Plays are often held here.
Every year, the colorful festival Teej is celebrated in Nek Chand Rock Garden. The festival is specifically celebrated by woman. They get dressed in colorful outfits, buy bangles, dances and decorate (Hina) mehndi on their hands. The day is celebrated with full enthusiasm.
