Books of the South by Ramunas K Fishermang

With this I am leaving you for a little while. I am going for a nine day trip to Lofoten to explore the mountains and see how autumn looks like over there.

I wanted to end the Portugal series (for the time being, as we move onto darker and colder, but equally magical autumn themes) with something symbolic. Sand Patterns in Adraga beach during twilight it is.

About composition and idea: I wanted to convey the feeling of twilight here, a calm but magical moment. The running water is the result of retreating flood and the light wasn’t actually this strong, but a long exposure brought it out (another reason why I like long exposures – they show light that our eyes don’t see) in the reflections very well. The sand patterns and running water lines appealed to me endlessly.

About processing: Most of the work was already done by the long exposure, so the only things I did here was finding the right white balance while keeping the right amount of saturation. For some reason this was way too easy to get over to too much magenta, golden or green, but I think I got there eventually. Some overall darkening was done, in addition to simple light painting to farther bring forth the sand patterns (same thing could be done by blending exposures or adjusting layers through defined masks, but I found this the most effective) and slight sharpening of dark tones through TK panel.
