Spuds Mackenzie was made famous as a spokesdog for Budweiser in 1987. Spuds was a marketing extravaganza, and was soon on posters, t-shirts, and bandanas. Spuds even had his own bit of celebrity controversy when it came out that he was a she. The dog that portrayed Spuds was a female. This didn't really put a dent in Spud's popularity though. The controversy that brought an end to Spud's marketing campaign was the accusation that he/she was being used to market beer to children. Spuds was retired in 1989, at the height of his/her game. Spuds continued to be highly popular, enough so that the dog appeared in People's best dressed list in 1990.
