Steven Spielberg tests positive for Covid forcing him to withdraw from Gotham Awards in New York

Steven Spielberg was unable to attend Monday night’s Gotham Awards in New York due to Covid.

The legendary filmmaker, 75, was due to present actress Michelle Williams, 42, with a tribute to the performer, but had to skip after testing positive for the virus.

He was replaced by Paul Dano, 38 – Williams’ co-star in the Spielberg-directed autobiographical film The Fabelmans – who confirmed the news on stage, saying “Steven has had Covid”, after she was initially reported by Variety.

During the presentation,Dano shared some memories of being at the Hollywood premiere of the film with Williams and how they talked about being young actors in Los Angeles.

‘Michelle said, ‘I remember driving around town looking for a job. And I thought, “Imagine if this teenager knew that in the middle of her career she would see a Gothams tribute from none other than Steven Spielberg, and what would she have thought?”

He continued, “Then I thought, ‘Well, what if we were to tell this girl that Steven has COVID? She’d be like, “What is COVID?” and that “Paul Dano was going to introduce you? She’d be like, “Who the hell is Paul Dano?” ”
