Karima Delli: “There will be no ecological transition without social justice”

Published on :

On the eve of the opening of COP27 in Egypt, MEP Karima Delli, one of the great voices of ecology in the European Parliament and the president of the transport and tourism committee within this institution, speaks on the urgency of climate issues. What does the European Union propose on the subject and is it up to these challenges?

As Europe suffocates this fall with summer temperatures, Karima Delli castigates politicians who have not anticipated the speed of climate change, despite warnings from environmentalists. “We have been sounding the alarm for 40 years, we have not been listened to, we have been taken for sweet dreamers. Today, the consequences are there”, she laments. The MEP from the Greens group takes up the words of Antonio Guterres, the Secretary General of the United Nations: “We are heading towards a global catastrophe.”

Faced with this emergency, Karima Delli warns that France is following an energy transition that is too slow. It campaigns for a more ambitious economic policy in this area, thermal renovation of existing buildings and massive use of renewable energies.

Asked about the consequences of the war in Ukraine on energy and in particular on the current shortage of fuel, the president of the transport committee in the European Parliament considers that it is necessary “to favor the alternatives: more trains, public transport , biking”. “But we must help those who have no choice, she insists elsewhere. There will be no ecological transition without social justice.”

Regarding gas and the EU’s desire to cap its price, Karima Delli refuses to headlong. “Gas is a fossil fuel. No scenario justifies pushing fossil fuels or opening new operations”, she underlines. The ecologist believes that it is necessary to aim for the exit of gas in the long term to move towards renewable alternatives. Even if Europe must, according to her, play a role of price regulator.

Faced with the development of the electric car and the possible exploitation of lithium in France, Karima Delli advocates caution. “We have to think about the life cycle of a car, the circular economy and the materials we need for the challenges of tomorrow”, tempers the president of the transport commission.

Karima Delli also attacks the plan of Emmanuel Macron’s government to launch six new EPRs (nuclear reactors) without real public debate when, according to her, “nuclear energy is a dangerous, expensive, polluting, unsuitable energy”.

The elected also criticizes the results of the various Conferences on the climate. “Nothing is moving,” she protests. […] Rich countries have failed to revise their climate targets.” But she welcomes the European Green Deal’s target of a 55% cut in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 – while wondering if this ambition will come to fruition Karima Delli also regrets that the promises of green funds from the COP in 2009 to help Africa and the countries of the South have not been kept.

Finally, on the subject of recent disputes between France and Germany, particularly on defense and energy, Karima Delli believes that “when the Franco-German couple is put to the test, there may be a renewal for Europe. There should be a new dynamic.” According to her, national decisions should not be taken in a selfish way and we must play collectively: “The pandemic has shown how we can be united”, she discovered.
